I am also in agreement with many of this post’s points.

However as the data field evolves, we’re going to be seeing increased specialization of data roles. Some folks will be involved heavily on the technical end of the data lifecycle with less of their time spent trying to convince business stakeholders the value of the data; while other folks will be focused on data “storytelling”, insight creation, and context formation. And even within a role - say a data engineer - there might be some variability of skills being brought to the data team between two data engineers. More diversity of skills is better, no?

What troubles me is that we still haven’t come to an agreement on the over-arching goal of a data team. I think as long as this goal is being met then the data team is delivering value. And perhaps the goal will need to be different across companies and industries. But it needs to be defined with clarity and specificity so data teams can be seen as integral to the company rather than a cost center.
